Yap, FSM – The Agriculture Division at the Department of Resources & Development has confirmed the ongoing spread of the invasive Little Fire Ant (LFA) in various locations across Yap State. Since the first detection in Waanyan, Gagil, in November 2017, a total of 28 confirmed LFA-infested areas have been recorded, spanning approximately 127.57 acres.
The LFA infestations have been identified in several municipalities, including Gagil, Rull, Dalipebinaw, Tamil, and Fanif. The most recent confirmations occurred in 2024, with areas like Tomil’s Wotegai Residence and the Ifalik Compound as well as the Dalipebinaw Landfill Dumping Area being affected.
According to Agriculture Francis, they have been using various chemicals to kill the invasive insects as well as using the most effective way of peanut butter, and others like water, suntan cream, and vegetable oil. Peanut butter is the most effective.
The Agriculture Division continues to monitor the spread of LFA and urges the public to be vigilant. The department encourages reporting any sightings of this invasive species to help control the infestation and protect local agriculture and ecosystems.
