Yap, FSM - On Wednesday, February 28th, 2024, the Department of Youth and Civic Affairs (DYCA) interviewed Supervisor Weather Service Specialist Choorang Falan and Weather Service Specialist Katherine Tun at the Yap State Weather Station. The interview centered on the effects, causes, and insights into the ongoing El Nino conditions.
During the interview, Mr. Falan and Ms. Tun discussed how Yap State is currently experiencing severe drought conditions, as indicated by the level of rainfall, for the next 3-month forecast (e.i. February, March, and April). They also highlighted that the primary cause of El Nino conditions in the Pacific Ocean is due to the sea surface temperature, leading to alterations in weather patterns.
Additionally, they shared past El Nino conditions experiences and the significant consequences faced. For example, in 1996, the State of Yap endured severe El Nino conditions, resulting in measures such as digging further to access more water in the dam due to the water shortage crisis.
Furthermore, Mr. Falan discussed future measures that the Yap State Government and water organizations should begin to implement by assisting the Yap State community in recovering from the El Nino impact through efforts to increase and improve communications among stakeholders.
The Weather Station advised the general public that a significant step to mitigate the effects of the water shortage crisis is to address any water leakages in pipes to ensure long-term water storage.
