Public Health Advisory on Norovirus Prevention Thursday, January 09, 2024///DYCA-PIO

The Department of Public Health and Social Services is urging the public to take steps to prevent norovirus as cases rise across the country. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports a 32% increase in norovirus cases compared to last week.

Norovirus, also known as the "stomach flu" or "stomach bug," is a very contagious virus that spreads easily. It can be caught through contact with an infected person, eating or drinking contaminated food or water, or touching surfaces that have the virus on them. Symptoms usually appear between 12 and 48 hours after exposure and can include diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, or stomach pain. While most people recover within 1 to 3 days, young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for more severe symptoms.

To protect yourself and others from norovirus, the public is encouraged to:

Wash your hands well with soap and water.

Wash fruits and vegetables carefully and cook shellfish thoroughly.

Clean and disinfect surfaces that might be contaminated.

Stay home for at least 2 days after symptoms stop if you are sick.

By following these simple steps, you can help reduce the spread of norovirus in the community.
