Colonia, Yap – “They are who they are. They are Upward Bound.”- Kekaimalu Sermanyoung
Three up-and-coming seniors Skylor Tamangmed, Evrettlee Marlichog, and Kekaimalu Sermanyoung enthusiastically stated that they enjoy partaking in community service because it is a way they can help better their community. They also stated that community service acts as a way to help foster and strengthen their bonds with their peers.
On June 28, 2024, Yap High School Upward Bound Program students began their day with a community service project. A total of 48 students, accompanied by 2 staff members, 5 instructors, and 3 tutors, collaborated with the Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T) to clean up the seaport in Colonia. DPW&T provided necessary cleaning supplies, such as rakes, bush cutters, and water. To ensure the students' safety, Kevin Carl Thumguy, the Port Facility Security Officer, was present. From 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM, the group focused on raking, picking up trash, and cutting grass around the seaport. After a hardworking morning, the students enjoyed lunch and a swim, followed by more cleaning in the afternoon. They also had the opportunity to tour the Hapilmohol-2 vessel. This project was a way for the students to give back to the community and develop their character through service.
