Yap, FSM – Last week Thursday, May 2nd, 2024, marked the 8th World Tuna Day since the United Nations adopted UNGA Resolution AIRES/71/124. It is celebrated annually to commemorate the vital role of tuna in global ecosystems and economies and to recognize the significance of tuna as a critical food source and economic asset for many coastal communities. This day serves as a reminder of the need for collaboration to address challenges such as overfishing, bycatch, and unregulated fishing.
Furthermore, the Yap World Tuna Day 2024 Steering Committee, has been conducting meetings for an upcoming event celebration scheduled for May 24th and 25th this year. The event, co-hosted by the Department of Youth and Civic Affairs(DYCA) and the Department of Resources and Development(R&D), anticipates proposing a diverse range of engaging activities centered around the resonant theme of “Our Tuna Our Legacy.” – more details to follow.
