Yap, FSM— Last week, SPC Representative Ms. Kim Robertson connected with the Department of Youth and Civic Affairs (DYCA) and various stakeholders in Yap State to discuss the development of the Micronesian Islands Forum (MIF) Gender Equality Framework. The consultations aimed to gather insights and contributions to shape this crucial framework.
Ms. Robertson met with the following stakeholders:
10th Yap State Legislature Senator Anne-Marie Lamaar, Chair of the Committee on Finance, to discuss the success factors for women in politics and how to incorporate these insights into the MIF Gender Equality Framework, emphasizing the need for guidelines that respect unique cultural traditions while recognizing the complementary roles of men and women.
COM-FSM Dean Lourdes Roboman to discuss how MIF 'ecosystem' education fits into the Education and Regional Workforce Development committees.
Milew Community Youth Organization Representative, Ms. Vallynna Gippin, Tamil Community Youth Organization Coordinator, Ms. Marialynn Tiningmow, and Assistant Coordinator, FSM National Government, Anti-Human Trafficking Services Division, Ms. Linda Teteth, to discuss various ongoing and potential projects related to gender equality and social inclusion, identify priorities and gaps, and ensure that their insights are incorporated into the MIF Gender Equality Framework.
Green Climate Fund (GCF) Food Security and Livelihood Yap State Coordinator, Ms. Mercedes Tiningmow, to discuss the progress and challenges of the climate-smart agriculture project, including capacity building, value chain strengthening, and strategies to engage women and vulnerable households in Yap.
The objectives of these consultations were to identify priorities for gender equality and social inclusion in the context of existing projects and programs, gaps in relation to the MIF-endorsed Gender Equality Committee (GEC) primary areas of concern, challenges in implementation, and opportunities for integrating gender and social inclusion considerations across the 12 other MIF Standing Committees. The primary areas of concern endorsed by MIF include women’s economic empowerment, eliminating violence against women and girls, gender mainstreaming through sectoral work, resource mobilization for gender equality outcomes, and increasing women’s political participation. Ms. Robertson's engagement with these key stakeholders is vital to ensure that local perspectives are incorporated into the MIF Gender Equality Framework. This collaborative effort underscores the commitment to fostering a more inclusive and equitable society within the Micronesian Islands.
