Weather and Drought Update for Micronesia Monday, March 24, 2025/// DYCA PIO

Yap, FM – Over the past few weeks, rainfall patterns have varied across Micronesia. Guam and the CNMI have experienced mostly dry conditions with only light showers in the CNMI, while areas between Chuuk State and Kosrae State saw more rain than usual due to active trade winds. The northern and central Marshall Islands, western Yap State, and Kapingamarangi have been drier than normal, and the Republic of Palau remains wetter than usual due to the effects of the trade winds and the NET system.

The equator, east of 150E, continues to face drier-than-normal weather. While there are no major hydrologic impacts reported, plantations in the CNMI are drying out, though recent rains have helped areas like Rota and Guam. The fire risk remains high in Saipan and Tinian due to dry vegetation, but the short-term fire threat has lowered in Guam and Rota due to recent rainfall. Looking ahead, dry conditions are expected to continue across much of the region, with wetter weather predicted for Palau. El Niño conditions are weakening, and by April to June 2025, neutral conditions are expected.

In the long term, western Micronesia, Palau, and the Marianas are expected to have more rain, while the Marshall Islands and areas east of 140E may experience drier conditions. Residents are encouraged to monitor water levels and report any impacts to local authorities, especially during prolonged dry periods.
