WTD23 Theme: Adapting to FSM Tuna Fisheries Climate Change

A day to highlight the importance of Tuna and promote more sustainable fishing.

Today we call attention to the FSM National theme for World Tuna Day 2023 "Adapting FSM Tuna Fisheries Climate Change."

Did you know that climate changes the ocean's physical, chemical, and biological makeup? Climate change impacts are expected to have limited effects on the overall abundance of tuna in the Pacific until 2050/60.

Climate change under continued greenhouse emissions will change tuna habitat and reduce nutrients and food availability for tuna.

These impacts will progressively push tuna populations from our waters into the high sea.

Fishing efforts will continue to be the dominant driver of what happens to tuna fishing populations, at least until 2050.

The effects of fishing on the abundance of tuna species greatly outweigh any likely decrease from climate change. This means good fishing management is critical for sustaining tuna populations.

Let us continue conservation and management measures for all tuna species to maintain healthy populations resilient to climate change.
