Yap DHS Communicable Disease Weekly Report Week 41

Yap, FSM –  According to the Epinet team at the Department of Health Services Communicable Disease Epiweek 41 reports Influenza-like Illness (ILI), Diarrheal, Dengue-like-Illness (DLI) and

Severe Acute Respiratory Infections (SARI) were all on alert.


From October 7, 2024 to October 13, 2024 there were a total of 32 ILI cases reported by the OPD Main

Hospital, Nimgil CHC, Ulithi Health Center and Satawal Dispensary.


The number of Diarrheal Cases was above the threshold for Epiweek 41, with 8 cases reported by OPD

main hospital and Nimgil CHC.


Diarrhea illness symptoms are the passing of watery, loose, or unformed stools. Abdominal cramps and fever. There has to be at least 3 or more episodes of diarrhea within 24 to 72 hours.


An increase of Dengue Like Illnesses was seen and reported by the OPD Main Hospital and Nimgil CHC. There were a total of 14 DLI cases.


As for Severe Acute Respiratory Infections (SARI), there were 3 cases reported which is above the

threshold.


For Epiweek 41, there were no reported cases of Acute Fever and Rash (AFR), Prolonged Fever and

Unusual Events.


The Yap State Lab had reported 1 positive case of Leptospirosis, 2 positive cases of Chlamydia, 1

the positive case for Blood Cultures, 1 positive Trichomonas Vaginalis case, 1 positive case for Clostridium

difficile, 1 positive Enterotoxigenic E. coli case and 2 positive cases of Shigella/Enteroinvasive E. coli.

Leptospirosis is a disease caused by bacteria that affects people and animals. It spreads in the urine

(pee) of infected animals.


Chlamydia and Trichomoniasis are both sexually transmitted infections (STI). Most people with chlamydia

and Trichomoniasis don’t show symptoms, but the infection can cause serious complications if left untreated.


Following are some Pathogens that can cause diarrhea.


  • Clostridium difficile, is a bacterium that can infect the bowel and cause diarrhea. The infection most commonly affects people who have an immune system that is not working well, elderly persons, and persons who take medications that can alter their gut environment. In healthy people, the bacteria can live in the gut without causing any illness.

  • Enterotoxigenic coli (ETEC) is a type of E. coli bacteria that can cause diarrhea. Anyone can become infected with ETEC.

  • Shigella and Enteroinvasive Escherichia coli (EIEC) are gram-negative bacteria responsible for bacillary dysentery (shigellosis) in humans, which is characterized by invasion and inflammatory destruction of the human colonic epithelium.


Of the total 23 sites, 18 submitted reports with 4 sites reporting syndromes. 5 sites did not report.
