Yap, FSM - The Yap State Department of Health Services (DHS) has issued a weekly report on communicable diseases, highlighting the latest trends and updates on notifiable diseases in the state.
According to the Week 49 report, a notable increase in diarrheal cases has been observed, exceeding the threshold that requires further investigation. The hospital and laboratory reports have confirmed one case of Salmonella and two types of E. coli among the reported cases.
In addition, a slight increase in Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) cases has been reported, with a total of 10 cases recorded by the Main Hospital, Ulithi Health Center, and Woleai Health Center. Although the numbers remain below the threshold, the department is closely monitoring the situation to ensure prompt response and control measures are in place.
The OPD reported two cases of Dengue-Like Illness (DLI), which were subsequently tested negative for both Leptospirosis and Dengue fever.
In addition to other reported cases, the Yap State Laboratory has identified several notable cases of concern. Specifically, the lab has reported 10 positive cases of Chlamydia, 2 positive cases of Gonorrhea, and 2 cases of ESBL (Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamase) Escherichia coli, a type of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
Furthermore, the lab has also detected 1 case of MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), a type of bacteria resistant to many antibiotics; 1 case of Salmonella, a common cause of food poisoning; and 1 case of enteropathogenic E. coli, a type of E. coli that can cause diarrhea and vomiting.
Other notable cases include 1 case of Enterotoxigenic E. coli, a type of E. coli that can cause traveler's diarrhea; 1 case of ESBL Escherichia coli, a type of antibiotic-resistant E. coli; and 1 positive case of ESBL Klebsiella pneumoniae, another type of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
Fortunately, there have been no reports of Acute Fever and Rash (AFR), Prolonged Fever, and Unusual Events during this reporting period.
This week, 21 out of 23 surveillance sites submitted reports, with the Hospital, Ulithi Health Center, and Woleai Health Center indicating syndromic illnesses.
The Yap State Department of Health would like to remind the public to maintain good hygiene practices, such as frequent handwashing, proper food handling, and adequate sanitation, to prevent the spread of communicable diseases.
