Colonia, Yap – The Enhanced Direct Access (EDA) Program Workshop, facilitated by the SPC(South Pacific Community) Enhancing Direct Access (EDA) Grant Facility and Thematic, took place on July 26 from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM. The event was hosted by the Yap EDA Team and saw the participation of representatives from the state government including the Department of Resources & Development (R&D), R&D Quarantine, YSL Senator John Mafel, YSPSC, and Council of Pilung.
The workshop began with a pre-workshop survey to assess participants' knowledge. Discussions on food security featured examples from the island food community of Pohnpei. Water security insights were shared, highlighting the collaboration between the USAID Climate Ready team and the Saint Barnabas Youth Group in Paies Village, Pohnpei. A multifaceted approach to disaster risk reduction was discussed, exemplified by the Madlay community and the local Nipa Palm forest in Yap.
Participants engaged in one-hour sessions to develop plans for food security, water security, and disaster risk reduction, addressing major challenges faced by islands such as the FSM. Traditional practices, solutions, and challenges were explored, focusing on building island resilience to climate change. The importance of interconnected projects based on food security, water security, and disaster risk reduction was emphasized. Concerns about community weariness towards external assistance were also addressed. The second module of the workshop focused on guiding communities on how to submit projects for consideration and support. The workshop ended with a pre-workshop survey to assess participants' knowledge.
This workshop was a crucial step towards empowering communities to enhance their resilience and effectively address the impacts of climate change through direct access to necessary resources and knowledge.
