Yap, FSM — A public hearing was held by the Yap State Legislature’s Committee on Finance last week Wednesday, August 28th, to discuss the proposed FY2025 budget for the Scholarship Office at the Department of Resources & Development. The meeting was attended by key members of the Legislature, including Speaker Figirlaarwon, Committee of Finance, Vice Chairman of the Red Committee, Chief of Procurement & Supply from the Office of Administrative Services, and the Budget Analyst from the Office of Planning and Budget (OPB), among others.
The hearing focused on the Scholarship Office's budget request, which includes $200,000 to be funded entirely by the state's tobacco tax, as mandated by Yap State Law 9-46. This allocation is allotted for scholarship awards in FY2025. Additionally, the proposed budget aims to supplement an earlier allocation of $230,000, previously approved under the Compact Sector, bringing the total scholarship fund to $430,000.
The hearing also addressed the challenges faced by Yapese students attending universities outside of Yap, emphasizing the importance of better communication with universities regarding the eligibility of Yapese students for in-state tuition and other financial aid opportunities.
As the hearing concluded, it was clear that there was a shared commitment among Yap State officials to enhance the scholarship program. The Finance Committee plans to follow up with the Scholarship Office to review their progress and ensure that the proposed changes are implemented effectively. The goal is to better support Yapese students in their educational pursuits and to equip them with the necessary resources to succeed in their academic endeavors.
