Yap State, October 10, 2023—In collaboration with the Red Cross, CRS, IOM, and DECEM, Director Ivan En, Acting Disaster Coordination Officer, spearheaded awareness initiatives in Yap State on the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction.
Observed annually on October 13th, this global initiative was established in 1989 by the United Nations General Assembly to foster a worldwide culture of risk awareness and disaster reduction. This year’s theme, “Fighting Inequality for a Resilient Future,” underscores the link between disasters and inequality.
To mark the occasion, a High School Essay Contest was organized, with the award ceremony falling on October 13, 2023. Winners included Maxine Siyarofwaiu (Faith Christian Academy, 3rd place - $100), Emily Tunumgeg (Faith Christian Academy, 2nd place - $200), and John Gilken (Yap Catholic High School, 1st place - $300). All prizes are in the form of gift certificates for YCA, providing winners the opportunity to shop for school supplies and other essentials.
Ivan En highlighted the success of school visitations and presentations that the group had. Although only two high schools participated this year, the DCO expressed hope for increased community involvement in the coming years as awareness on Disaster Risk Reduction continues to grow.
