Yap, FSM - Yap's health authorities have released the Epiweek 47 report, which highlights a concerning increase in diarrheal cases, with 7 cases reported, placing it above the established threshold and triggering an Alert status. The Alert status for Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) remains in effect, with a reported increase to 6 cases, including 2 cases of Acute Bronchiolitis and 1 case of Acute Moderate Bronchiolitis in children aged 0 to 4 years. Among older patients, 3 cases were documented, consisting of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and 2 cases of pneumonia, one of which is under consideration for possible pulmonary tuberculosis.
In addition, Epiweek 47 saw the reporting of 4 cases of Influenza-like Illness (ILI) by the outpatient department (OPD) at the main hospital, alongside one case of Diarrheal Like Illness (DLI). It's worth noting that there were no new reports for Acute Fever and Rash, Prolonged Fever, or Unusual Events this week.
Laboratory testing from Yap Lab returned a variety of findings: 1 case of Salmonella, 2 cases of Trichomonas Vaginalis, 1 case of enteropathogenic E. coli, and positive results for Diarrheagenic E. coli/Shigella: Enteroaggregative E. coli (EAEC) from Biofire panel tests.
Out of 23 surveillance sites, 22 submitted data, but only the OPD main hospital and Marbaa Community Health Center reported a total of 18 syndromes.
Community members are encouraged to practice good hygiene and seek medical consultation when necessary as the health department continues to monitor these trends closely.
