Australian Embassy Supports Feasibility Studies for Solar Mini Grids in Yap and Pohnpei Thursday, February 8, 2024//Yap Media

Yap, FSM –The Australian Embassy has taken a significant step towards promoting renewable energy in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). In response to Australia's request, the FSM Government has agreed to undertake feasibility studies on the viability of constructing solar mini-grids in the islands of Yap and Pohnpei. This collaborative effort aims to provide sustainable and reliable power sources to these remote communities.

To facilitate this initiative, Mr. Joshua Curd, a Consultant from Elemental Group, is currently on-site in Yap and Pohnpei until February 25th, 2024. His primary responsibility is to conduct thorough feasibility studies in the outer islands of Falalop Woleai (Yap) and Pingelap (Pohnpei). These studies will assess the potential for solar mini-grids and determine the technical and economic feasibility of implementation.

To ensure a smooth operation, Mr. Curd and his team chartered a flight to Woleai on Pacific Mission Aviation. The visit was meticulously planned in consultation with the CEOs of Pohnpei Utilities Corporation and Yap State Public Service Corporation Office. By actively involving key stakeholders, such as utility companies, the project aims to gain valuable insights into existing infrastructure and grid integration possibilities.
