Yap, FM- The Federated States of Micronesia GEF6 is launching a project aimed at protecting its natural environment from the harmful effects of invasive alien species (IAS). The "Safeguarding Biodiversity from Invasive Alien Species" project, running from 2020 to 2025, focuses on preserving both land and marine ecosystems, as well as agriculture and fisheries.

The project aims to strengthen the country's approach to managing biosecurity, ensuring that the government, private sector, and citizens work together to prevent the spread of invasive species. This includes improving awareness and understanding of IAS, creating better policies, and building stronger systems to manage biosecurity across all sectors in Yap and the FSM.

The movement of people, goods, and supplies across borders makes it easy for invasive species to spread. Therefore, everyone, from government officials to visitors, shares the responsibility of protecting the environment. The project will address key challenges, such as limited awareness, weak policies, and a lack of operational capacity, through four key components.

By improving biosecurity efforts, the project aims to safeguard the FSM's rich biodiversity and ensure the sustainability of its natural resources for future generations.
