Today, April 25, 2025 students and staff at Gilman Elementary School held their annual Food Fair, a fun and meaningful event that happens in all elementary schools every year. The main goal is to celebrate and keep their local food traditions alive for the younger generation.
The students were divided into three groups – White, Red, and Blue. Each group helped prepare different types of local dishes, including energy foods, body-building foods, and protective foods.
Some of the foods they cooked included taro, tapioca, and chestnuts, as well as seafood like fried fish, crab, and fish soup. They also made sea snail soup, local chicken, mango pickles, and tasty tropical fruits like watermelon, banana, pineapple, papaya, and fruit salad.
This event is important because it teaches students about their culture and helps them remember and appreciate their local foods and snacks. By cooking and sharing these dishes, they are helping to keep traditional recipes alive for the future.
