UOG Makes Waves at SACNAS: 48 Students Shine at National STEM Conference Wednesday, December 11, 2024//DYCA

Yap, FSM – Last month, the University of Guam (UOG) made history by sending its largest group ever—48 attendees, including 34 students—to the 2024 Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) National Diversity in STEM Conference in Phoenix, Arizona. This event is one of the major stages for STEM research in the country.

This impressive turnout showcases UOG’s dedication to providing valuable education and research opportunities.

Of the 34 students, 22 presented innovative research in marine biology, environmental science, and engineering. Their presentations highlighted Guam’s distinct environmental and cultural viewpoints on a national platform.

Each presentation represented hard work and commitment to understanding our region's unique challenges and opportunities. For example, Anna Lhyn Mallari, a senior in civil engineering, received an award for her research. She thanked her mentors and expressed pride in representing UOG.

Nadley Yow, a biology major from Yap, also earned recognition for her work, which connects traditional knowledge with modern scientific research. She shared how meaningful it was to present her project on a plant from her homeland, inspiring her to continue pursuing such opportunities.

UOG’s participation in SACNAS was funded by various grants, including those from the National Science Foundation and the Sloan Foundation, along with travel scholarships. The experience benefits the students and strengthens Guam as a growing center for research and science.

Returning students bring valuable skills and professional connections, which can spark innovation and economic growth in Guam. Their success serves as motivation for future generations of STEM leaders on the island and helps attract new partnerships with mainland institutions.
